Cattle Sorting

“2-MAN RANCH SORTING” AT THE ROCKIN’ JP

--- About 2-Man Ranch Sorting ---

Skills

Horsemanship and teamwork are as important here as they are in Team Penning, but the closer quarters of a smaller enclosure require superb balance, quick reflexes, and sharp maneuvers by horse & rider alike. The quick pace and reduced confines makes Cattle Sorting a truly enjoyable “spectator sport!”

The Setup

This event is run in two 50 ft x 50 ft pens, with a 12 foot opening between them. A team of 2 riders enter one side of the pen, while a dozen head of cattle (10 numbered, and 2 unnumbered) are gathered in the other.

The Object

As a single cattle’s number is called, that number is to be “sorted” from the herd, and driven through the gate - alone, until all 10 numbers have been sorted, in order, leaving the two unmarked cattle behind. A maximum of 75 seconds is allowed, and the number sorted is the teams score.

One team member is responsible for “sorting” the target number, and the other is charged with preventing the rest of the herd from passing through the gate.
