Team Penning

“TEAM PENNING” AT THE ROCKIN’ JP

--- About Team Penning ---

Skills

The skills used are as old as working cattle from horseback - horsemanship and teamwork. As a matter of fact, this event evolved from ranch work, the same as Rodeo did. Using the full arena gives the target cattle plenty of room to evade the riders, making for some great entertainment for spectators.

The Setup

At one end of the competition arena, a team of three riders is faced with a herd of 30 Cattle. The livestock are individually numbered 0 to 9. These numbers are glued to their backs to clearly indicate the target to the team. (This means there are 3 “#0’s,” 3 “#1’s,” 3 “#2’s,” etc.)

The Object

A team of three riders is given a specific number by the Announcer. They must separate the 3 cattle wearing that number from the herd of 30, drive them to the opposite end of the arena, and into a small pen. The event is timed, allowing 75 seconds for completion. The rest of the herd must remain at the “cattle end” of the arena.

Another event that also evolved from ranch work into a fast moving sport is “2-Man Ranch Sorting.” Click HERE to learn more.
